Butrón Castle

Butrón Castle

After a very active morning in which I had jumped for the first time in my life in paragliding and had resumed the surfboard, the afternoon was dedicated to much more relaxed activities.

Our first stop would take us to one of those places that make you open your eyes and ask: And what does this do here? I was before Butrón Castle, in the municipality of Gatica. At first glance I found that castle that I had as a child at home, which I built with pieces similar to those of Lego and that destroyed over and over again in the unequal battle that sustained the weak fortress against the deadly cannons of the powerful pirate ship of Playmobil There was no color, the clicks are many clicks.

But this castle has walls up to four meters thick. The original structure, built in the fifteenth century by the Butrón lineage, it consisted of a single tower house. These types of constructions were very common at the time. Unlike other parts of Spain, where castles proliferated, towers were built in the North due to greater atomization of manors.

Butrón House Coat of Arms

In the 19th century, the famous architect Marquis of Cubas He decided to undertake a deep reform of the tower house to let his imagination fly and build a Germanic castle with all kinds of ornaments and totally oblivious to the rest of the buildings in the region. The result is a fairytale castle, stately and powerful. Its exterior appearance hides, however, the true fact that it is a place of poor habitability. The towers have little space for rooms inside and there are several rooms that communicate by stairs and exterior walkways.

The landscape surrounding Butrón Castle gives the place even more melancholy. A river serves as a natural moat and trees - with exotic species brought from various parts of the world - and green pastures guard the doors of this construction that has been used in recent years as a place for celebrations and receptions. Its high maintenance cost has been the reason that its current owners have used to auction it. The starting price is around 3.5 million Euros. So, if you have something loose in your pocket and you have always dreamed of being princes or princesses with castle included, here you have your chance.

It was a shame not to be able to visit it inside because its exterior aspect invites you to do it, although sometimes it is better to use the imagination and project yourself in armories, rooms with thrones where conspiracies are whispered, banquet halls ... For me it is better than decoration Modern must have.
