Road sign of Freedom in Saint Girons
Views of the rural area of Saint Girons
The road opened in 1994 and is well signposted. Although at the beginning the main routes to escape the war were concentrated on the coast with Bayonne and Toulouse as main starting points, over time and to avoid German controls, new routes were created through the central Pyrenees with Saint Girons in Ariège as initial epicenter. Without a doubt, it was the most difficult route crossing the 3,000 meter peaks of the Pyrenean mountain range and, thus, avoiding the dreaded Nazi controls.
Following the route of the Freedom Road in Saint Girons, about a thousand cases of evasion are known, although only 100 people who could escape from the clutches of the World War are fruitfully recorded.
The trails are easily accessible in the Saint Girons area
