I visited Machu Picchu following the cheapest route through Santa María to avoid the expensive train. Already at that time - mid-December - the rains did theirs and it took us a couple of days to get to the place. I do not even want to imagine the difficulties that any tourist will have experienced if they chose the secondary road of Santa María when the storm was getting worse.
The ruins of Machu Picchu were recently decorated as one of the new wonders of the world and receives almost one million inhabitants a year. Without a doubt, it is one of the privileged tourist places in South America and the economic consequences of the closure will undoubtedly have been of enormous proportions.
